What Is a Demat Account?
A Demat account holds shares and other eligible securities electronically.
Start the lessonIntroduction
An electronic place to hold investments
Demat means dematerialized. A Demat account keeps shares and other eligible securities in electronic form instead of paper certificates. In India, investors open it through a Depository Participant (DP), which provides access to a depository.
The short answer
A Demat account is where securities you own are held electronically. It does not hold your spending money or place trade orders.
What it holds
Your securities in electronic form
What you can hold depends on the security and account arrangements.
- Shares of listed companies
- Some bonds and government securities
- Mutual fund units and other eligible securities
- Shares allotted to you in an IPO
NSDL and CDSL are India's depositories. A Depository Participant, such as an eligible broker or financial institution, provides the account service to investors.
How it works
Follow a share from purchase to holding
- 1
You place an order
Use a trading account through a broker to place a buy or sell order.
- 2
The order is matched
If a matching order is available, the exchange facilitates the trade.
- 3
The trade is settled
After settlement, shares you bought are credited electronically to your Demat account.
If you receive an IPO allotment, allotted shares are also credited electronically to your Demat account.
Three accounts, different roles
Demat, trading, and bank accounts
They work together, but each has a different job.
Easy way to remember
Bank account: money. Trading account: orders. Demat account: securities.
What to keep in mind
Check the account terms and charges
- A Demat account is opened with a Depository Participant linked to NSDL or CDSL.
- The DP may charge account maintenance or transaction-related fees; check its current schedule.
- Opening a Demat account does not itself make you an investor or guarantee returns.
- Keep your account credentials, statements, and contact details secure and up to date.
