About EPF

What is EPF?

EPF is a retirement fund for salaried employees in organisations covered by EPFO. You and your employer each contribute 12% of basic salary and dearness allowance. The employer's share is split between EPS (pension) and your EPF account.

How this calculator works

It projects balance using EPFO passbook rules: monthly interest on the opening balance, credited once a year. Employer EPF is 12% minus EPS, with EPS capped at ₹1,250/month when basic exceeds ₹15,000. Salary increment applies from year two.

At ₹50,000 basic, monthly EPF is ₹10,750 (₹6,000 employee + ₹4,750 employer EPF).

Employer split

  • • Employee: full 12% goes to EPF
  • • Employer: 8.33% to EPS, balance to EPF
  • • EPS is capped at ₹1,250/month (on basic up to ₹15,000)
  • • EPS balance is separate — not included in EPF maturity here

Withdrawal

  • • Full withdrawal allowed at retirement (typically age 58)
  • • Partial withdrawal for house, education, medical, unemployment
  • • Rules and limits are on the EPFO portal — forms vary by reason

Tax

  • • Employee contribution: eligible under Section 80C (within ₹1.5 lakh limit)
  • • Interest: tax-free if contributions continued for 5+ years
  • • Withdrawal after 5 years of continuous service is generally tax-free

Check your balance

Log in to the EPFO member portal or UMANG app with your UAN to see the actual passbook. This tool is a projection — rates, increments, and job changes will differ from any single employer stint.

Disclaimer: Figures are estimates based on EPFO interest rules. Actual balances depend on your passbook, transfers, and rate revisions. Confirm details on epfindia.gov.in or with your employer.

Questions & answers

How much goes to EPF from salary?
Employee: 12% of basic + DA. Employer: 12% of basic + DA, but part goes to EPS (pension) and the rest to your EPF. EPS is capped at ₹1,250/month when basic exceeds ₹15,000.
How does EPFO pay interest?
Declared once a year (rate set by the government). It is applied on your opening balance each month and credited in one lump at year-end. This tool follows that passbook-style method.
Is EPF taxable on withdrawal?
Employee contribution qualifies under Section 80C (within the ₹1.5 lakh cap). Withdrawal after 5 years of continuous service is generally tax-free. Match the figure with your EPFO passbook before planning around it.
