ChatGPT
ChatGPT is the familiar starting point for most people trying a general-purpose AI assistant. We'll start with the basics, then look at its most useful features, current plan options, and a few practical ways to get clearer replies.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a chat-based assistant built by OpenAI. Type a question or a task in plain English (or pretty much any language) and it replies conversationally. It keeps track of what was said earlier in the chat, so you can ask a follow-up without repeating yourself.
It runs on OpenAI's GPT family of models. OpenAI renames and updates these fairly often, but day to day you don't really need to track which version you're on. The chat interface just picks a sensible default for you.
Getting started
- Go to chatgpt.com.
- Sign up with an email address, or continue with a Google or Microsoft account.
- Type a question in the message box at the bottom and press Enter.
- Stay in the same thread for follow-up questions; it keeps the context.
What ChatGPT can do
These are the features most likely to matter in everyday use. The examples show the sort of request each one handles well.
Writing & editing
Drafts, emails, summaries, and rewriting text in a different tone.
Coding help
Explain an error message, write a function, or review code you paste in.
items[5] on a 3-item list. Check the list's length with len(items) before indexing.File & image analysis
Upload a PDF, spreadsheet, or photo and ask questions about it.
Image generation
Describe an image in words and get a generated picture back.
The image shows up right in the chat, and you can view it full-size or download it.
Voice mode
Talk out loud and get a spoken reply back. Handy when you're on your phone.
"Summarize this article for me." The spoken reply plays back automatically.
Web search
ChatGPT can browse the web for current information and cite its sources.
Custom GPTs
Pre-configured versions of ChatGPT built for one job, found in the GPT store.
Memory & Projects
It can remember facts across chats, and Projects group related chats and files together.
Pricing tiers
OpenAI adjusts pricing and usage limits fairly often, so check the official pricing page before you subscribe. Here are the practical differences between the plans:
- · Everyday chat and questions
- · Limited image generation
- · Basic file uploads
- · Now shows ads
- · Light users who outgrow Free
- · Roughly 10x the Free usage limits
- · Still ad-supported
- · Higher usage limits, ad-free
- · Faster responses at busy times
- · Access to more advanced models
- · Admin controls for organizations
- · Data excluded from model training
- · Shared workspace features
There's also a Pro tier for heavy daily users (well above Plus pricing), with the most usage headroom and access to the top-end models.
Prompting tips
- Say what you want the output to look like: a list, a table, a short paragraph.
- Give context: who the answer is for, and what you already know.
- If the task is underspecified, ask it to ask you questions first ("ask me anything you need before answering").
- If the first reply isn't quite right, just say exactly what to change and try again.
- For anything factual and time-sensitive, ask it to search the web instead of relying on memory alone.
