What is Meta AI?
Meta AI is a free assistant built by Meta, running on its Llama family of models. Rather than being a separate destination you have to seek out, it's built directly into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, the apps billions of people already use to message friends and browse.
There's also a standalone Meta AI app and a meta.ai website for a dedicated chat interface, and it powers voice interactions on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
Getting started
- Open an app you probably already have: WhatsApp or Instagram.
- In WhatsApp, message the Meta AI chat, or type
@Meta AIin a group chat. In Instagram, tap the AI icon in search or DMs. - No separate sign-up is needed; it uses the account you're already logged into.
- Prefer a dedicated app? Use the standalone Meta AI app or meta.ai instead.
What Meta AI can do
These are the features most likely to matter in everyday use. The examples show the sort of request each one handles well.
Writing & everyday questions
Drafts, quick explanations, and rewriting a message in a different tone, right inside a chat.
Image generation & editing
Describe a picture in words, or ask it to edit or restore a photo you already have.
The image shows up right in the chat, and you can save it or share it straight to a story or post.
Voice mode
Talk out loud and get a spoken reply back, useful when your hands are busy.
"What's a good side dish for chicken curry?" The spoken reply plays back automatically.
Smart glasses
On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Meta AI can see and hear what you do and answer hands-free.
"Hey Meta, what am I looking at?" On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the built-in camera and microphone let Meta AI answer about whatever is in front of you, hands-free.
Pricing
Unlike ChatGPT or Grok, Meta AI doesn't have its own paid subscription tier. It's free across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook, and the standalone app, with no separate account or plan to buy.
The one thing that does cost money is the hardware: Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are sold separately, starting at a few hundred dollars, if you want Meta AI hands-free. Check Meta's glasses page for current models and prices.
Prompting tips
- Say what you want the output to look like: a list, a table, a short paragraph.
- Give context: who the answer is for, and what you already know.
- For anything long or detailed, the standalone Meta AI app or meta.ai site gives more room to work than a chat bubble does.
- If the first reply isn't quite right, just say exactly what to change and try again.
- For complex reasoning, coding, or professional writing, it's worth comparing the answer against ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini; Meta AI's strength is convenience, not necessarily raw capability.
