Canva AI
Canva AI brings generative AI into Canva's Visual Suite, combining conversational creation with design, writing, image generation, editing, video, and other creative workflows. The useful part is seeing how the core AI tools work together, from prompting, usage limits, and practical workflows.
What is Canva AI?
Canva AI is Canva's conversational creative assistant. Instead of using a separate AI tool for every step, you can start with an idea and ask Canva to help create or refine designs, documents, images, and other visual content.
Canva AI works alongside Canva's broader AI features, including Magic Design, Magic Media, Magic Write, AI-powered photo editing, and other tools in the Visual Suite. Canva describes the newer Canva AI experience as a way to move from the first idea to the final design through conversation while keeping control of the result.
Getting started
- Go to Canva and sign in.
- Open Canva AI from the homepage or the Canva AI button in the editor.
- Describe what you want to create, or provide existing media or a design as context.
- Choose the relevant creation mode, such as a design, image, or video clip.
- Review the result and continue refining it with prompts and normal Canva editing tools.
How Canva AI works
Canva AI is designed around an iterative workflow. Start broad, inspect the generated result, then use follow-up instructions or normal Canva controls to make the design fit your exact needs.
What Canva AI can do
Canva's AI tools cover several parts of the creative process rather than one isolated generation task.

Canva AI vs. individual Magic tools
Canva's AI ecosystem contains both the conversational Canva AI experience and focused tools for particular jobs. Choosing the right entry point can make the workflow faster.
| Tool | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Canva AI | Conversational creation and refinement across Canva workflows. |
| Magic Design | Starting a design from a prompt, media, or content. |

Writing better Canva AI prompts
Canva recommends giving enough context and instruction to guide the result. A practical prompt can include the content type, audience, purpose, tone, visual style, format, and important brand or layout requirements.
- State exactly what you want to create.
- Give the intended audience and purpose.
- Specify format or platform when it matters.
- Add visual style, tone, colors, or brand requirements.
- Use follow-up prompts to refine one problem at a time.
AI usage and plan limits
Canva's AI features do not all use allowances in the same way. Canva currently separates AI features into different categories, with some standard tools available without using a monthly AI allowance on paid plans and other premium or ultra tools drawing from a shared allowance. Limits and included features vary by plan and can change.
